Picking the Best Baby Name

Author: Gail Leino

Those who are about to become proud parents can often have a lot of trouble picking the best baby names for their new bundle of joy. It is a very difficult task in this modern age in which just about every name and number under the sun is up for grabs. Parents have named their kids such notable monomers as Moon Unit or Apple and while many people are still using names that stand out less you can usually pick a common name with a little flair, but which one.

You can get a start on attacking the issue of the babys name by writing down a list of all the names that you like and you can think of. Dont worry about where it comes from or what context you heard it in just write it down so you dont forget it. These can be names of places, old names of family members, feelings, and even the common everyday names we usually come across. That way you have a list of all the names you could possible conceive of ever using for your child.

From there go over the names with your spouse and analyze them. Is one name so popular that every time you call your childs name in public a bunch of heads will turn? How does the name sound when it rolls of your tongue, especially when used with the surname? Will a name lead to unfortunate nicknames in elementary school, such as Bubba? Do you want a gender neutral name or do you want everyone to know what sex your child is when looking at the name?

After youve crossed off names that may have seemed perfectly fine when picked but after analysis seem inappropriate you should be left with at most a potential dozen names. Although usually parents can narrow it down much more. There may even be one or two names that have been popping out at you from the very beginning of the name selection process. You will likely carry this list of final names around with you for a while because you and your spouse will be at odds, with you favoring one name and your spouse favoring another. Eventually a little nagging will help you pick out a final name.
