Hurricanes and Pregnancies; Play it Safe and Prepare

Author: Lance Winslow

If you are a pregnant woman and expecting to have a child and there are mandatory evacuations then you are required by law to leave the region and you should follow the law more than anyone else. When you are pregnant it is essential that you keep your immune system in top order and that means you need good hygiene, proper food and water.

Often after large category storms there may be a power outage for up to three to four weeks and severe flooding can often make drinking water undrinkable without boiling. Often it is hard to boil water when everything is soggy and you cannot make a fire and all the power is out to.

Perhaps you have regenerator with some gas cans available so you can heat water, but also realize that if the power is out for three weeks what are you going to do? It is essential that you think ahead on these issues to protect your unborn child entity and it is your responsibility to do so. Obviously you do not need someone telling you what to do, but it is smart to play it safe and perhaps have a friend in another state who can take you in to their home where there are telephones and power until things are back on in your region and everything is safe again.

As a pregnant woman you cannot guarantee that the hotels will not be filled up prior to your leaving the area, as a matter of fact the hotels might be filled up for over 1000 mile radius and that means even if you to get out of town you may be stranded somewhere run out of gasoline and have to sleep in your car. This obviously is not very good for your health or your unborn child. Consider this in 2006.
