Teaching Babies Sign Language

Author: Elizabeth Flynn

There are many advantages to teaching babies sign language. It use to only be used for people who were hearing impared or speech impared, as a way for them to communicate. Others would learn sign language, so they would have the ability to communicate with someone who was impared. Now people have taken sign language to the next level, teaching babies sign language.

Teaching babies sign language is a very innovative idea. I think we all have wondered some time or another what children are thinking. Now there is a way to figure that out. Children want to communicate with us also. They would like to let us know if they need something or want something, without having to cry or point to it, hoping we will understand.

Babies are very eager to learn, which makes teaching them sign language early with simple signs like, more, food, drink or tired, easy for them. They understand things very quickly, for example teaching them no, we all know they understand that very quickly, it's the listening to us when we say that that's difficult.

Babies, toddlers and children have been shown to have a much easier time with speech and communication abilities when they have been taught sign language at an early age. Opening the communication port between children and adults can never come to soon. Having the ability to tell someone when something is wrong or if something is needed, with sign language, instead of crying and having fits, allows the child to have a little more independence.

Children are also shown to be more socially outgoing when they've been taught sign language as a baby or toddler. Having the ability to communicate their feelings, needs and wants earlier through signing, gives them a sense of security with themselves, which grows stronger as they get older. Socially this is a very important part of child development. When a child feels secure within themselves, their confidence level is also higher. Having a higher sense of confidence, children are more outgoing, socially and physically.

I have found through researching, teaching babies sign language, there aren't any con's to using this method of communication with children. However, I have found many pro's to using this method. Not only are your children given the opportunity to become more independent and confident, they are learning another means of communication with signing. This will enable your child to communicate with hearing impared, or speech impared individuals.
