Guidelines To Keep You Out Of Hot Water When Giving Gifts To Dates

Author: Gregg Hall

At the beginning of a new relationship many men tend to bring gifts for their dates. Traditionally it was part of the courting ritual to bring flowers and candy to the woman on a first date. However, the times have changed and so have some common dating rituals.

Dating today is more active than it once was. It consists of sports activities and games to name a few. More couples are interested in being active together as opposed to seeing a movie or date where there is no chance for conversation. Gifts should not be given at all during the first few dates or the gift may be seen as a way of buying affection. Gifts such as flowers on the day after a date will be more meaningful. Saying thank you for the wonderful time is more impressive than arriving with flowers on the first date.

After a few dates and both parties are starting to feel more comfortable and connected with one another, a small gift may be welcome. The most important thing to keep in mind is to keep the gifts small and inexpensive. You should not purchase an expensive gift at this point or the woman may feel that by accepting the gift she is obligated to you when she may not be ready yet.

After both parties have reached a point where both are comfortable and consider each other their boyfriend or girlfriend it is okay to give and receive gifts. At this time men may want to surprise their date with flowers, candy or another small gift.

Men may consider buying some jewelry such as earrings, necklace, or a bracelet. The jewelry should be tasteful but not expensive. Gold or silver is easy to afford and comes in a variety of styles. The gift should be something that says I am thinking about you or I enjoy the time we spend together.

It is important to stay away from buying rings as a gift since this may be seen as a serious gift. Generally rings should not be purchased unless you intend to propose marriage to the woman.

Dating rules are not set in stone they are merely suggestions. Different rules work for different people so you may have other ideas on dating and gift giving. Men can give women a gift at any point in the dating relationship but depending on the gift or the timing, the gift may be seen negatively. It is better to spend the money on a good time that both parties can enjoy together as opposed to a gift. After you have been dating awhile it is perfectly all right to buy your dates a small gift but save the big more expensive gifts until you are ready for making a lifetime commitment to one another.
