Internet Addiction on the Rise

The Internet is an increasing presence in the lives of many. To most, the internet is a source of information, education, commerce outlet and/or fun. But for a few people, the Internet has become an obsession, often to the detriment of their families, careers, and well-being. There is an increase in the number of people addicted to Internet activities.

Warning signals that you or someone you know is obsessed with the Internet include:

Spending an excessive amount of time on the Internet in general as well as in chat rooms.
Losing interest in family, friends and social activities.
Making time on the Internet a higher priority than normal family responsibilities.
Scheduling activities around the Internet.
Difficulty limiting time on the Internet.
Unless your job/business is Internet driven, checking your mailbox several times a day.
Denying to self and others how much time spent on the Internet.
Friends or family complain about the time you spend at your computer.
Unless your job/business is Internet driven it is difficult to stay away for several days.
Unless your job/business is Internet driven, your work output or your personal relationships suffered as a result of spending time on the Internet.
Particular areas on the Internet or types of files are difficult to resist.
Trouble controlling impulses to purchase items, products, or services on the Internet.
Derive much of your pleasure and satisfaction in life from being on the Internet.
Going on line when spouse or family members are not home, with a sense of relief.
